Of course, you are all waiting to hear about our latest escapades from the Marga-Raleigh-ville/Rocky Mount Parrot(t)head Staff Phlocking! Well, you asked for it, and here it is…..
From different corners of the states, the Parrothead Webring staff converged upon Raleigh in anticipation of a Jimmy Buffett Music weekend. And we started with a surprise birthday party. Think we gotcha, Billy!
The Parrot Heads of North Carolina, located in Raleigh, NC, were hosting the Friday night show at Woody's featuring the fantastic A1A: The Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band. Jeff Pike and Scott Nickerson, who make up A1A, never cease to amaze me. It seems like every show is better and better. And each time is so personal to our group. This time there was no mention of "Stop Yawning, Billy" or "Wake Up, Lisa" but there was a wonderful rendition of "Happy Birthday, Billy" for the Old Parrothead who turned 64 on December 9. This man will grow old, but NEVER up! He's got to be the youngest Parrothead I know! So from everyone, I'm sure, Happy Birthday, Billy!
Happy Memories of Marga-raleigh-ville, December 5, 1997
The Parrot Heads of North Carolina threw a wonderful show complete with a kewl raffle. There were many T-Shirts, Corona Ice Bucket pails, and 3 inflatable seaplanes. The grand prize was an even larger seaplane. And can you believe it, Billy won a Corona bucket! Talk about lucky! Well, we all sat right up front by the band, almost in their laps…. but we'll get to that later, so we got to be right there in the middle of things. Here's a list of our group members so you can have an idea of what Scott and Jeff got to look at all night. We had Donna (Southern Belle), Billy and Buddy Peoples (the old Parrothead who just went one year older), Lee and Bernice Howard (entertainment for Saturday night), and coming in later that night, JJ and Pat Jeffcoat!
more Happy Memories.....
Of course, Herbie the inflatable shark was there with me since Ernie couldn't make it. Herbie wore his fuzzy Santa hat and A1A button especially for the occasion. And to be sure, Herbie got right out there on the dance floor when they played his theme song, FINS. "FINZ to the left, FINZ to the right". He actually kept the beat pretty well, too! After the entertainment, he was that star of a photo shoot with the Raleigh club members… it was like he was a star all of a sudden!
The Great A1A Band.....
Billy, the birthday boy, flirting.....
getting warmed up.....
getting really hot.....
Around 1:30 we piled out of the club to go back to the hotel and do some more birthday celebrating… still had plenty of cake and candy. *note: Lee Howard was playing Navigator…. More about this escapade later in the story! Bernice was still hanging in there despite the serious injuries she had suffered in a horseback riding accident just 2 weeks prior to this. I tell ya, I have a lot of respect for that woman. Here she was with a steel rod in her upper left arm, pins all through her wrist, the whole arm wrapped up in ace bandages and hung in a sling, with only her swollen hand sticking out of the bandages… and still she hung in there with the best of us. The whole night! Don't believe I would have been able to do that! My hat's off to you, Bernice! You are definitely a woman to be admired.
About the navigation part, we've kind of hinted about giving Lee the title "Parrot(t)Head Navigator" cause he earned the position! This man was a wildlife guide in his last life! Look, anytime you come across Lee and he wants you to follow him somewhere, make sure your vehicle has a really good turning radius cause you'll be making some U-turns! Lee, we LUV ya, bud!
About 3:00 am, everyone sort of started going off on their way; Donna to her room with a huge tub and king size bed one floor below ours, Lee and Bernice for their 1 hour drive home to Rocky Mount, and Billy, Buddy and I in the party room. That's right, folks…. Billy got to sleep with two ladies that night! What a birthday present! There goes MY reputation, cause Billy already had one!
Saturday came way too early for me, but we had a 2 hour drive ahead of us in order to get to Rocky Mount for Saturday night's entertainment package. Once there in Rocky Mount, we checked into our hotel and went looking for lunch. With some directions from Lee Howard, we found a wonderful diner with a great buffet(t). Food was delicious and we each had several plates…
Then it was back to the hotel for a nap.
Now to tell you about our Saturday night schedule. We had the ultimate pleasure of listening to one of our newest ring members sing for us at the Woody's in Rocky Mount. Lee Howard serenaded us for several very enjoyable hours on his guitar. Not only does he sing Buffett stuff, but the man also sings his own original creations. And his songs are good. In fact he has a wonderful CD out named "The Lure of the Sea", and you can get lots more information from Lee from his web address http://www2.coastalnet.com/~v4b2m5rm. Take my word on it, it's well worth listening to Lee! We heard a wonderful concert that night. He even invented the "Sometimer's Disease". Ask him about it… he said he didn't do it, but I say he did!
Woody's at Rocky Mount, NC, December 6, 1997
But we also coined a new term…. Lee used it in a song referring to Billy… something about "barnacle brain", like growing older but not up!
So there you have it… the story of our little escapades in Parrothead Paradise. I hope every time the webring members get together we have as much fun as we have had during the last two phlockings. The companionship we experienced, as well as the wonderful entertainment, just can't be beaten, and I hope we can get together many more times…. including more and more members each time we meet.
